Bonded Insert in a CFRP Sandwich Panel

Verify every bond. Detect every void.

Detect missing adhesive, insufficient resin and potting defects inside composite structures using robotic X-ray inspection, photon-counting detector technology and multi-axis limited-angle CT.

How can you verify that adhesive has been applied correctly inside a composite structure?

Once a bonded assembly is completed, adhesive distribution can no longer be verified by visual inspection. Missing adhesive, insufficient resin or incomplete potting may remain hidden inside the structure while significantly reducing its mechanical strength and long-term reliability.

RadalyX enables reliable non-destructive testing (NDT) of bonded joints, revealing adhesive distribution, potting geometry and hidden manufacturing defects without disassembly.

See the difference

To demonstrate how bonded joints can be inspected without disassembly, we examined a CFRP sandwich panel with a cold-bonded insert inside a Nomex® honeycomb core.

While conventional 2D X-ray radiography confirmed the presence of the insert, it could not accurately evaluate the distribution of the potting compound. Overlapping honeycomb cells created parallax effects, preventing reliable assessment of adhesive distribution and depth.

Using multi-axis limited-angle CT, RadalyX reconstructed individual depth layers and revealed the complete three-dimensional configuration of the insert and surrounding potting compound. Engineers could evaluate adhesive distribution at every depth, verify insert geometry and inspect each honeycomb layer independently—providing significantly more information than conventional 2D radiography.
